DUEL CREDITS

 Under the previous system, a high school student could enroll in college courses (after meeting the college's

academic requirements) that would apply both to high school credit and college credit (hence the name "dual credit").

Prior to this year, these classes were paid by the state of Texas.  Due to current budget cuts, these classes will

no longer be free.  A dual credit student will now pay the same fees as any other students.  Since all of us are

considered out-of-district (we don't live in the tax district that supports ACCD) that translates into a minimum

of $1100 for one class.  That fee will exclude many homeschoolers from being able to participate in these classes.

The dual credit program wants to accomodate homeschoolers, so they have offered the option of gathering 15 or

more students to make a class (more than likely an online class) where the professor would be paid a set fee of $3000-4000.  This would substantially reduce the cost per class.

Due to these changes, those of us currently in the program are scrambling to pull together more students to make these classes.  One of the major road blocks is that the deadline for application for fall 2012 already closed.  At yesterday's meeting we got the dual credit coordinators to agree that they would extend the deadline to April 1 so that we could gather more interested students.  Even with this extension, it is going to be a huge task to coordinate our efforts to combine students.  In light of this, MelRae Ambs and I are hosting an informational meeting to explain and address these issues.  In addition, I will give some other options for dual credit. MelRae has graciously offered her home for this meeting.  She has also put out this information to her contacts in New Braunfels in the hope that we can facilitate coordinating dual credit groups.

                       http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HSDualCredit4SanAntonio/ This group will bring together information about how to enroll and participate in Dual Credit Courses with St. Philip's College using the Group Assembly Option. In a nutshell, St. Philip's is willing to provide delivery method (either a classroom or online technology), curriculum, and an adjunct professor for each qualified course. Each Cours...e Group will be responsible for providing between 15 to 30 qualified high school students and pay for the instructor’s fee. St. Philip’s will waive all other fees and tuition associated with the course.

To see if your student(s) qualify for dual credit courses, please go to St. Philip’s Dual Credit website:
http://www.alamo.edu/main.aspx?id=898

If you think your student(s) are even remotely interested, please go now to www.applytexas.org and fill out an application for each student. The process will be easier if you include the student’s social security number, so please include it.
For this group, please choose St. Philip’s College. There is no obligation to participate, and half the work will be done! If at a later date, you choose to start with another college for dual credit, it is easily changed. However,

The current policy is once the High School Dual Credit Program is started with a college, i.e. St Philip’s College; the student must remain with that college.

This Group Assembly Option is especially beneficial to students who live in the “service districts.” These are the outlying counties surrounding Bexar County. Starting with the fall semester, service districts will pay FULL “Out of District” tuition. Yes, in the past that was waived, but it was made very clear that unless the student resided inside the Bexar tax base, the student would be required to pay full tuition.
http://myspccatalog.alamo.edu/content.php?catoid=73&navoid=1731#Tuition_Schedule

How much will this cost each student? That will depend on how many “chairs” are filled for each course. It would range from $100 to $200 for a 3 credit course up to $200 to $400 for a 4 credit course with lab. Obviously, we would like each course FILLED!

Thank you for joining me on this Journey.

You must purchase a required textbook that you can purchase at a local bookstore such as Borders. If you want your child tested, that is the parent's priviledge.
They do take a written test but the drivers test is optional since the parent's were the instructors.

Description

This group is for homeschool teens. It was started so teens would have a way to get together, have fun, talk, laugh and hang out. Here are our requirements for joining:

*Must be homeschooled.

*Must be between the ages of 13 - 19.

*This is a SECULAR homeschool group. All faiths & beliefs are welcome. Respect of other peoples beliefs is mandatory.

*Drugs, Alcohol , Nicotine and WEAPONs are not permitted at any get together or activity. If a teen is caught using any of these during an event they will be asked to leave and not return.

*Parent participation is required. A parent must attend at least the 1st 3 get togethers with their child. After that a parent may drop off their child for an event as long as they get permission in advance.

*RSVP'ing for events by stated date is madatory.Just showing up is not allowed A minimum of 4 teens will be required for an event to occur. If it is not met then the event will be cancelled.

Activities will include movies, parties, bowling, skating etc. The kids can suggest activities they would like to do & if the parents agree then we will try to make it happen.I hope you will join our group.

Please when you join give an intro for your teen. Please include parent's name,teen's name ,age and whatever else you may want to add. I feel it is only fair that everyone knows everyone in the group. I don't think this is asking for too much.Thank you in advance :0)

Also I ask if you join & feel this isn't the group for you please don't feel bad about unsubscribing. I believe we are going to close the group at 100 families & I would hate for half the members to be people who don't plan on attending events.You don't have to attend every one but please try to attend a few :0).
I was asking that all families volunteer for an event on the calendar but I would like to change the rule to that. You can only host an event if you have been to a previous group event.In other words we would like to meet you before you host something

Home Teens

Christian homeschooling group looking for families with young teens that are serious about committing to a growing teen group with Christ as our center.
Our group is just getting started and because of that we are starting out slowly. We currently are welcoming families with teens between the ages of 13 yrs and 16yrs in the school yr 2010 to 2011. Each following year we will add an older age to the mix. The Home Teens are part of a larger Christian group on the NE side of town called the Home Team.
There are lots of activities for the younger siblings and family members as well, besides the chaperoned teen events. Admittance to the Home Teens requires membership with the Home Team. Many activities will include the whole family such as our Friday park days!

COLLEGE CORNER

More and more homeschoolers are taking AP exams as a very inexpensive way to
get college credit for courses taught at home. As cost effective as they
are, though, the $84 fee can be steep for some low income families.

The Federal Dept of Education offers grants to the states to pay the AP exam
fees for low income students. In my research, most states will pay the exam
fees for *all* low income students.
http://professionals.collegeboard.com/testing/ap/coordinate/fee-assistance

I researched the grant that states apply for and it specifically allows them
to apply for money to pay fees for privately educated students.
http://www.ed.gov/programs/apfee/2008-84330b.pdf [Indicate whether you will
be paying test fees for low-income students who attend non-public schools;,
page 37]
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
We really benefited from something this year that I have found few
homeschoolers know about. The College Board has a Fee Waiver program that
can save a low income family a ton of money. I thought you might want to be
aware of this.
Here's how it works: A homeschool family who meets the low income guidelines
would go to the guidance counselor at a local public or private high school.
They would show some proof of income to the guidance counselor and would
receive fee waiver cards as needed. It's easier to qualify than you might
think. A family of six has to make less than $51,079. There are quite a few
families in our area that qualify.
Here's what you are able to get help with:
*SAT Reasoning Tests - 2 administrations ($43 each) including question and
answer service ($18 each) or student answer service ($10) *Additional Score
Reports - 4 free ($9.50 each) *SAT Subject Tests - 2 administrations of up
to three tests each (up to $48 or more each admin) *College Application Fee
Waivers - 4 free college applications (this can save you from $25 to $75 per
school) Also, additional schools beyond your four will often waive fees as
well.
This can save a family $450 or more -- a big help in a tough year.
